Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media, public speaker and Canadian. She created Feminist Frequency the site which features video and posts discussing the depictions of females in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American journalist and critic that has received awards for her writing, is a feminist blogger. She is the founder and the director executive of Feminist Frequency a non-profit educational website which explores the portrayals of women within popular culture narratives. The challenge of destroying stereotypes regarding women is her main focus. But, she also strives to raise awareness about concerns like the issue of discrimination and harassment of women online. Sarkeesian has a Master's degree in the field of political and social thought from York University. As a public speaker, she's well-known and has spoken at TEDxWomenXOXO as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Since her early years, Sarkeesian was fascinated by gender issues and feminist thought. When she was still in school, in 2009 she developed the Feminist Frequency website. She had a plan to create a web series examining gender representation in video games and found herself at the center for an online harassment campaign. The attack did not stop her from pursuing the project, and instead reinforced her commitment to be feminist critique of the media. As a result of the many contribution she's made to feminism, she is recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the director of Feminist Frequency an educational organization focused on the representations of women within pop culture storylines.
